Monaco’s Prince Albert at release of birds in Mercantour Park

Yesterday Prince Albert II of Monaco assisted in the release of two rare falcons in the National Mercantour Park.

The Prince accompagnied a group, including Dominique Vian, Prefect of the Alps-Maritimes and Christian Estrosi, President of the Conseil Général to a cave at 1,900 metres altitude, above the hamlet of Vignols in the commune of Roubion.
The two raptors arrived by truck to the south of France from a zoo in Vienna the previous day.

They were weighted and measured before being placed in harnesses in wooden boxes and transported by foot to their new home in the park. The male and female, nicknamed Rocca and Fontvieille are three months old but already weigh six kilos. However, it won’t be for another three weeks before they attempt to fly.
This first release is as a result of a three-year partnership. The Prince Albert II Foundation will help finance this project as part of its ongoing commitment to the preservation of environmental biological diversity.

The birds will be monitored in the park and information on their behaviour analysed.
