Crowds in Monaco say ‘Thank You for the Music’

Abba-lutely fabulous!

If you blinked, you probably missed it, but Mamma Mia! fever swept the principality last week as the popular West End production ended its week-long stint in Monaco at the weekend.

Since its first premiere in London in 1999, Mamma Mia! has earned the distinction of being the musical with more productions playing simultaneously around the world than any other show, and last week was the first time the show has been produced for audiences in Monaco.

Incorporating the chart topping hits of Sweden’s greatest pop export, ABBA, the comedy musical was written by British playwright Catherine Johnson and songwriters Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, of ABBA fame.

The 17th longest running production in Broadway history, Mamma Mia! brought the Salle des Prince at the Grimauldi Forum to life with seven shows; five evening shows and two matinees, during its one week only premiere in Monaco.

The musical is a comedy which unfolds on a Greek island, depicting the story of a young woman nearing her wedding day and wishing her father to be present, the identity of whom has been narrowed down to a shortlist of three possible men by her mother.
