Monaco gives a royal welcome to Egyptian Queens

Exhibition opens in Grimaldi Forum

The Ancient Egyptians are famous the world over. It seems we are still in awe of this civilisation which continues to appear in contemporary films, books, history lessons and such like. However interesting history books may be, there is nothing like seeing the evidence for yourself, and this is the exciting opportunity offered by the Grimaldi Forum in its ‘Egyptian Queens’ exhibition.

The ‘Egyptian Queens’ will treat visitors to a 4000m² display of important women from three thousand years of Egyptian history, presenting the wives, daughters and mothers of Pharaohs, including Cleopatra. It is with this popular Queen that the exhibition begins, progressing onto other famous figures such as Hatshepsut, Tiy and Nefertari. Visitors will be presented with different themes throughout the exhibit, and can learn about the status of women, the status of the royal family, women's living environment, their religious role and the symbols used in portrayals of them.

The exhibition includes films and illustrations of the subject as interpreted by artists over the years, as well as papyrus paintings, artifacts and jewellery. Information areas are interspersed with rooms reflecting the areas of activity in Ancient Egypt, for example bedchambers and the Nile.

The ‘Egyptian Queens’ display begins on Saturday 12th July and runs until Wednesday 10th September. The women of this ancient civilisation can be discovered at Espace Ravel du Grimaldi Forum Monaco, everyday from 10am to 8pm, with late night opening until 10pm on Thursdays and Saturdays. Entry costs 10 e, with reductions for concessions and groups.
